Access to Personal Files
Act 1987

1987 Chapter 37

An Act to provide access for individuals to information relating to themselves maintained by certain authorities and to allow individuals to obtain copies of, and require amendment of, such information

This Act, promoted by the Campaign and introduced by Archy Kirkwood MP, gives council tenants have the right to see their housing records, social services clients the right to see their social work records and parents and older pupils the right to see school records.

Access to Medical Reports
Act 1988

1988 Chapter 28

An Act to establish a right of access by individuals to reports relating to themselves provided by medical practitioners for employment or insurance purposes and to make provision for related matters

This Act was also introduced as a private member's bill by Archy Kirkwood MP. It gives people the right to see reports supplied by their doctors to insurance companies and employers; to correct inaccurate information and to withold consent for the report to be sent if they find it unacceptable.

Environment and Safety
Information Act 1988

1988 Chapter 30

An Act to establish public registers of certain notices served concerning health, safety and environmental protection; and for related purposes.

This Act was introduced as a private member's bill by Chris Smith MP. It requires safety & environmental authorities to set up public registers of the enforcement notices they serve on factories, shops and other premises where public hazards or breaches of safety or environmental laws have occurred.

Access to Health Records
Act 1990

1990 Chapter 23

An Act to establish a right of access to health records by the individuals to whom they relate and other persons; to provide for the correction of inaccurate health records and for the avoidance of certain contractual obligations; and for connected purposes.

This Act allows people to see information recorded after 1 November 1991 on their manually held medical and health records; to obtain copies of the records; and to have misleading or inaccurate information corrected. The Act is the result of a private member's bill promoted by the Campaign and introduced by Doug Henderson MP.
