Freedom of Information is coming...!

A one day conference on the government's proposals
for a Freedom of Information Act

This conference will be the first opportunity to discuss the government's recent proposals for a Freedom of Information Act - and hear from Dr David Clark MP, the minister responsible for FOI, and key UK and international speakers. The government's white paper, published in December 1997, which is currently subject to consultation, announced that government departments, local authorities, NHS bodies, quangos, private bodies undertaking contracted-out functions and even the privatised utilities will be covered by the new Act enforced by an independent Information Commissioner. The new measures could be in force by the end of next year.

Chair: Sheena McDonald; Speakers include: The Rt Hon Dr David Clark MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster; Kevin Murphy, Information Commissioner designate under Ireland's 1997 FOI Act; Michael Tankersley, Senior Staff Attorney, Ralph Nader's Public Citizen Litigation Group, Washington DC; Charles Ramsden, Head of the Cabinet Office's Freedom of Information Unit; Sheila McKechnie, Director, Consumers' Association; Elizabeth France, Data Protection Registrar; John Wadham, Director, Liberty; Jonathan Baume, General Secretary, First Division Association of Civil Servants; Maurice Frankel, Director, Campaign for Freedom of Information.
